for joining us tonight. i'm maureen umeh. >> and i'm will thomas. working the campaign trail at the festival when the pitbull started tangling with a poodle. police on the scene responded. karen grey houston was on the scene as it all unfolded and brings us the account of what happened out there. >> reporter: it was an orderly festival, full of people, dogs, music, food and crafts. up until two dogs, this poodle seen here with its owner, and a pitbull got into it. >> two dogs were passing by and suddenly they jump up to each other. they were fighting. >> this is the distraught owner of the pitbull who was killed. eyewitnesses say the pitbull was the aggressor. >> the pitbull started biting the owner of the dog and her bystander that was there with her. started biting them. >> bystanders tried to separate the dogs. one of them, this man, says he was bitten by the pooled. and then police got involved. >> the one issue that does not appear to be in dispute is that a police officer pulled out his weapon out here and shot and killed the dog. how and why it happened depends on whom you ask. >> thi

for joining us i'm maureen umeh. >> and i'm will thomas. a husband and wife and a history of problem. tonight they are both dead. how it all unfolded right in front of a federal agent walking his dog. >> reporter: residents on wide water drive in the prince william county were jolted awake just after 7:30 in the morning by the sound of gunfire. francis wily's husband called out to her. >> he told me get down. get the kids. make sure they are in their room. close the door. tell them not to come out. and then there was another shot. >> reporter: a married couple, robert and jennifer bathes, who lived several miles away on erica drive for some reason had driven to this neighborhood in their ford sport utility vehicle. neighbors at the crime scene said a dea agent walking his dogs encountered the couple and saw robert baits holding a gun to his head. he turned the gun towards the unarm agent who backed away. jennifer baits ride to get out of the car and that's when the shots rang out. the agent started shouting loudly enough to shout to his neighbors. >> he was saying why did you kill her, why di

up with us. i'm will thomas. >> i'm maureen umeh. a murder was carried out on the street and the authorities of -- received information that the two men ran into the building. the cop his no choice but to go door-to-door looking for the gunman. >> reporter: the shooting took place at 4:00 today. at that point, the police decided to shut down a large apartment building. no one in, no one out and that happen the nid mel -- mild of the street. as they collected evidence, two special teams called active shooter squads were called in to search this building. the officers went door-to-door looking for possible suspects. >> and they saw in the ground level and -- and we maintain officers and the officers -- and until we do the entire building. >> reporter: police close down the building and residents were told to stay inside. we're told officers were posted at all exits, stairwells and the main lobby. residents not at home at the time of the shut down were forced to wait outside for hours. >> and to be patient and wait. >> reporter: one of the special police teams ended up findi

safe on the street. thanks for joining us. i'm maureen umeh. >> and i'm will thomas. the alert comes after a couple of students have been beaten. the police ask them to protect themselves when i will they look for robbers. >> i actually got the warning on my cell phone. >> reporter: the latest robbery is a little too close for tom. police say a student walking alone there at 2 a.m. saturday was beaten and robbed by four suspects. >> i have heard about a couple of muggings before and this one is close to home. we live right over here. so it is pretty crazy. >> on august 29th, three students waiting for a bus at the university shuttle stop were approached by five suspects. a couple of the victims ran to the volunteer fire station for help. but one was assaulted and robbed. >> it seems the suspects are preying on victims during the early morning or late evening hours. >> reporter: two days before that incident, a similar one just down the street in the parking lot of the clarion hotel. this time the victims were three students who left car observing karaoke at ej's landing at 12:30 a.m.

by a car, the driver nowhere to be found. good evening, i'm maureen umeh. >> i'm will thomas of the the hunt is on now at carol avenue in silver spring. tonight we learned what the victim was doing when the car hit her and then took off. matt aklin joins us live. >> reporter: we took the family members off the camera who had just visited her in the hospital. they say she did not look good. doctors are not sure if she will recover. 24-year-old daniela was born in guatemala. most recently she lived and worked about a block from where she was hit around 8:00 saturday night. she was struck a few feet away from her boyfriend's home. >> i heard a thump. it sounded like a car hit another car. >> montgomery county police are doing all they can to find the driver of what they believe was a small dark sedan, possibly a honda. they say the force of the impact caused some damage and even a piece of evidence was left behind. >> it did leave the right-hand side exterior passenger mirror on the scene after it struck her. >> neighbors say this narrow stretch of carol avenue can be hazardous.

has police officers on alert following targeted attacks. i'm maureen umeh. >> i'm will thomas. two homeowners homes were hit by gunfire. they are looking into the connection between violence and recent gang arrests. >> reporter: two homes and two shootings in two days have law enforcement officers in calvert county on edge. the sheriff there says someone is taking aim at police officers. >> and they were about a mile and a half apart from each other. and both of them were police force. so we don't believe that it was a random act. we believe that they targeted police officers. >> everybody stepped up on their own edge for this. it is not necessarily where this happened. this is all over the county now. so we are keeping our eyes open and more alert. >> reporter: on saturday a st. mary's deputy's car was shot in chesapeake ranch state in lesby. >> i heard a car coming up the road. a rapid pop pop pop pop pop heard about five shots. >> reporter: neighbors heard the gunfire. two bullets penetrated the house into a child's bedroom where a young toddler was sleeping. >> so the neighbors

to be nursed back to health. thanks for staying up with us. i'm will thomas. >> and i'm maureen umeh. one was taken from animal testing medical lab and the others from a dog fighting ring. >> reporter: this is undercover video taken by peta in a lab at gates county, north carolina. watch for yourself. peta says the video shows workers mistreating cats, dogs, even rabbits. after this video was released the department of agriculture launched an investigation and the lab released the animals. some of them were brought to the washington animal rescue league. >> this is the case of about 200 animals in north eastern and north carolina and just a horrific medical research lab. >> reporter: saturday they looked over the rescued animals. the first goal is to nurse them back to health. the second is find them good homes. >> what we saw in the video was really nothing short of abuse. really deplorable. probably about the worst rescue disaster situation we've encountered. >> reporter: but that is just one rescue effort underway at the rescue league this weekend. ten pitbull dogs arrived on saturday
